"Beyond the East/West: Towards a Culture of the Future"
By Adunis "Ali Ahmad Said"
* Delivered Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at Dartmouth College.
I admit that when I hear the word frontiers, I feel that it is immediately transformed into chains ringing within me. When I envision it in its martial image, the image of barbed wires, and see how these wires extend in the selves and minds the way they extend on the ground, I am stricken with terror from all
directions.......................

Hugo once said" Every self comprises a complete model of all the selves." Man is a totality before he is a part. How then do we affirm this totality? This is the
question that should inform every cultural policy if it is to rise to a universal and a human level. It is the cultural policy that declares, after human rights, the rights of nature as well as the rights of universalism.

In Al Nakba’s,Palestinian Exodus 50th Anniversary,
Adonis Denounces Arab Chauvinistic Voices

...Adonis’s implicit focus is on the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), which he briefly joined in his youth........

The Lebanese Civil War offers the best example of what Adonis is referring to. In today's Lebanon, those who attempt to study the war–its causes, consequences, and what can be done to avert its reoccurrence–risk a lot, the least of which is the accusation of opening past wounds. “The Lebanese-Lebanese war,” a term used by Adonis, witnessed “the collapse of basic foundations, values and slogans.” Since the architects of the racist thinking view the Lebanese civil war as the deed of the other, particularly the Jews, they have no problem in watching the war's players “washing their hands and embracing” with its conclusion. A war which claimed more than 150,000 lives becomes simply a “slight fault,” as if “ nothing had happened. No need for analysis or study, no questions that deepen consciousness...If individuals or institutions adopt a critical and reflective position toward Al Nakba , they stand accused merely for participating in criticism, and are accused even as in truth they reject Zionist ideology, refusing its ‘identity.' It is those who applied the ‘pressure' that confirm for the Arab-Jewish intellectuals that Zionism is the fate of every Jew: an inescapable fate!”

>To Adonis, “ our Achilles'heel is not outside us as much as it is within us.” His concluding remarks pose a thought-provoking question: “What is the difference between the position of the Serbian militias which ostracize the Muslim and annihilate him for being Muslim, and this ‘position' which ostracizes the Jew for being Jewish?...Why are we then surprised, and consequently protest, when the Arab is ostracized by Western and racist official agencies merely for being Arab?”

"Some Arab poets are more popular than Adonis Mahmoud Darwish, the Palestinian poet, for instance but none are more admired. A pioneer of the prose poem, he has played a role in Arab modernism comparable to T. S. Eliot's in English-language poetry. The literary and cultural critic Edward Said calls him "today's most daring and provocative Arab poet." The poet Samuel Hazo, who translated Adonis's collection "The Pages of Day and Night," said, "There is Arabic poetry before Adonis, and there is Arabic poetry after Adonis."
Experimental in style and prophetic in tone, Adonis's poetry combines the formal innovations of modernism with the mystical imagery of classical Arabic poetry. He has evoked the anguish of exile, the spiritual desolation of the Arab world, the intoxicating experiences of madness and erotic bliss, the existential dance of self and the other. But what defines his work, above all, is the force of creative destruction, which burns through everything he writes. "We will die if we do not create gods/We will die if we do not kill them," he once wrote, echoing his favorite poet, Nietzsche."
Even someone as poorly read in Arabic literature as I (something I'm working on correcting) remembers how classes used to light up whenever we got to read an Adonis poem. But since this is a New York Times piece, there is of course discussion of repression, fixed elections, fundamentalism (all of which are themes the newspaper is incapable of not bringing up when talking about the Arab world, regardless of the topic) and an insistence that Adonis's secular views are "unpopular," which seems to contradict everything else they say about him.

Said uses traditional Arab poetic styles to express modern views. Said proposes that poetry has two components -- song and function. A poet must be judged by the causes that he champions. The poet has two sides - the "I" and the "other". The poet must represent the group.

After a trip to New York in 1971, Said wrote the poem, "The Funeral of New York" which opens:

Picture the earth as a pear
or breast.
Between such fruits and death
survives an engineering trick:
New York,
Call it a city on four legs
heading for murder
while the drowned already moan
in the distance.
New York is a woman
holding, according to history,
a rag called liberty with one hand
and strangling the earth with the other.

Said was considered to be a candidate for the 2005 Nobel Prize in Literature, but the award went to British playwright Harold Pinter. Many of Said's supporters were critical of that choice

ADAM

Choking quietly
with pain,
Adam whispered to me,
"I am not the father
of the world.
I had
no glimpse of paradise.
Take me to God."

Adonis has a thing for voices. As with many of his writings, he employs human characters to voice out his thoughts and ideas. The words of this poem are not just written on the page, they're spoken aloud. We both read and listen at the same time. This poetic tactic, if you will, accentuates his writing. The voices add depth to the written word, providing us with something that is almost tangible. The spoken words seem more believable, more human. Adonis has mastered this art of putting onto page what is spoken between people.

DIALOGUE

Who are you? Whom do you choose, 0, Mihyar?
Wherever you go, there is God or Satan's abyss
an abyss coming, an abyss going.
And the world is choice.
I choose neither God nor Satan.
Each is a wall.
Each closes my eyes.
Why replace one wall by another,
when my perplexity is the perplexity of the
light-giving,
The perplexity of the all-knowing?

.....I don't know of any ancient Arab poet who created a persona through which he expressed his thought and preoccupations and visions, although we can find an equivalent in our traditional prose: Kelila and Dimna by I bn al-Muqaffa', for example.
So, doubtless, in my creating the persona of Mihyar the Damascene I was influenced by Western models: Nietsche's Zarathustra, Goethe's Faust and Lauteramont's Maldoror.
There are some Arab critics who confuse Mihyar the Damascene with the poet Mihyar al-Dailami, but they share only the name Mihyar; otherwise they bear no relationship to each other, none whatever.

If I dared, I'd say:
the planets, heaven and its genealogy
men and their language as ordain( are floating corpses.

If I dared, I'd inquire:

who is, now, being tried by fire?
What does he insinuate, what does
relate? has he confessed? and was? He was?

If I dared, I'd chant
for the cities crashing into ashes and blood, and to the devouring n
I'd declare:

It is this time's
article of faith, that earth should breed
inside a corpse, and a god be suspended
as a sort of charm above
its arches, by crime.

Phoenix,
when the flames enfolded you,
what pen were you holding?
What feathers sprouted
when your old ones burned?
Buried in your own ashes,
what world did you confront,
what robe did you done,
what color did you choose?

Tell me.
Tell me what silence follows
the final silence
spun from the very fall of the sun?
What is it, phoenix?
Give me a word,
a sign.

Your banishment and mine
are one.
Your banishment and mine
and the banishment of heroes
are one.
Your banishment and mine
and the banishment of heroes
and the banishment of love and glory
are one.

What is it we love or fear
but shadows of ourselves?
When I recall your suffering,
my phoenix,
I forget my own.
No mother held you
when you left
until you burned for breath.
No father blessed your exile
in his heart
before you saw it born
in flame with each horizon.
I've left.
I've left my mother.
I've left my mother
on a mat of straw
to grieve my going.
Astray, I swallow dust.
I, who learned love
from my father's eyes,
have left my father's house
to be the prodigal.

I am a hunted bird.
I steal my bread.
All I see is desolation.
Pursued by falcons,
my small wings lose their feathers,
feather by feather.

"They say my song is strange
because it has no echo.
They say my song is strange
because I never dreamed
myself awake on silks.
They say I disbelieved the prophesies,
and it was true,
and it is still and always true."

My phoenix,
I learn with you
the banishment that murders me
in ruins and the sheerest voids.
I break from jail
to seek the man I keep becoming.
I leave the gait ajar,
the chain empty,
and the darkness of my cell
devours me like eyes in shadow.

Though banished,
I love all those who banish me,
who crowned my brow with chains
and waited to betray me.
I see my childhood
like an isolated Baalbek
with its longing pillars,
and I burn.
Horizon by horizon,
I am born to the chants of the sun.

My new wings grow
like yours, my phoenix.
Phoenix, we are born for death,
and death in life
deserves its springs and harvests,
its rivering Jesus,
its passion with the vineyard
and the mount.
But it is not all solitude
and echoes from the grave.

Phoenix, I remember one
who perished on a cross-
extinguished.
He burned in pools of cherry
like fire within fire-
extinguished.
Yet from the dark of the ashes
he glows.

His wings are numbered
with the flowers of our land,
with all the days of all the years,
with pebbles and the merest stones.
Like you, my phoenix,
he survived our hunger,
and his mercy feeds us.

Dying with his wings outspread,
he gathered all who buried
him in ashes
and became, like you,
the spring and fire of our agony.

Go now, my sweet bird,
show me the road I'll follow.

a Lebanese court found Marcel Khalife innocent of blasphemy...

...At a protest in Paris, Adonis, perhaps the best-known figure of contemporary Arab poetry, placed responsibility for the prosecution on Arab leaders "who preach the abolition of freedoms to protect and support their transient political and religious authorities — choking minds to support dying theories." He continued, stating that "those who interpret and present religion often use it to fashion a human in perpetual chains in spite of the fact that religion, in its original meaning, was founded to benefit mankind. They have succeeded in making religion man's enemy in the realms of speculation and inquiry"....

In his defense of Khalife, Adonis, who remains invested in a positive vision of religion, approached but failed to enunciate the link between religious and state authority. When Bakunin in God and the State railed against "the collective and historical insanity which calls itself religion," he argued that its eternal mirage enabled governing classes to manipulate civil society, acquire social power, and accumulate wealth. Claims of religious morality are, at bottom, no more than claims over secular power.....

In his statement from the courthouse steps, Khalife spoke words of accomodation. "The accusation against me stems merely from relating passionately to a Koranic verse which opened my soul to vast horizons in ways no other text is capable of doing. I stand accused because I believed that the spirit of religion is more broad and tolerant than the interpretations by those who appoint themselves as guardians of our faith and morality. I also believed that inquisition courts were things of the past."...

Khalife and Adonis are bound for disappointment. Sometimes in an understandable desire to appreciate spiritual qualities, we forget that no social progress ever arrived without blasphemy, heresy and apostasy. To pretend that frauds of religion are truth would be hypocrisy.

I don't think people "in the know" would ever suggest the Arabs are "inept" - those are the meanderings of a frustrated mind...the potential is there, the intelligence is there among many, but there is too much illiteracy (but this can be easily fixed if the priorities changed...), and there is poverty (again...priorities, priorities...), and there has never been Arab unity...and there is a greater divide between the rich and the poor than in the west...and, and, and...but the Arabs are not "inept"

US *really* wants *democracy* in the ME? yeah, who believes that... "But then the disenfranchised radical muslims may grab power, oh no!"...why is US not pushing for "democracy" in Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, etc...

hey,

My minute right is worth $100. I'm packing for home and it is anything but smooth.

Anyway and a quick answer, I don't know this guy before now, however, I wish to point out few things about his video:

1) WRONG ABOUT EVERYTHING RELATED TO ARABS AND ISLAM.
2) He is not driven by hate and prejudice like Dr. Wafa Sultan.
3) I myself is living proof that he is wrong all the way.

Last, about this organization called MARMI or whatever, it is sponsored by Israel solely to present and stereotyps Arab and Muslims in a way that service Israel's umtlimate goal. Domination over the entire of the middle east (and that's their promised land by the way) from Nile river in Eygept to Iraq.

I'm very busy to reply to him fully, many basic things in Islam proves many things he mentioned is wrong. Plus, Arabs are the ones who speak Arabic and that will never go away. The Quran is Arabic.

In anycase, as for democracy, believe it or not, prophet Mohammad was odered to conslut others in seriuos matters and gave full right and safety for all to talk and argue with him. Even some very violent approaches from certain people, he was still listening and careful in giving out the best response to the questions and counter views of others.

Last, he doesn't know s**t about Islam for him to speak about it like this. Islam ruling was and must be based on 'Shura' or concil, with which representatives are gather to select the leader. Also, shura is always conducted for serious matters.

Islam is not just a personal thing to be kept for someone's perosnal life, rather, it is a global and comprehensive systems within which individuals enjoy many freedoms that current governments in the Arab and muslim world do not give to their citizens.

There isn't any country in the Muslim world, and as far as I know, that gives the citizens freedoms granted by the religion itself.

As for speaking outloud and to the public, Islam prohibits (as far as I know) public slander and hate driven opinions. Also, the Islamic ruling doesn't allow any kind of violence and insecurity spreading. So, if some group wants to ignite the differences within a society ruled by the Islamic law, then those responsible will persecuted as threat to social securith and harmony.

Basically, all that racist crap that comes out the American media that stereotype a certain group of people in a certain way, is prohibited. So, when the media was stereotyping blacks as criminals, the Islamic government would monitor and not allow such thing to happen. When the American media covers a story of a crime, the Islamic media will not allow the spread of fear as this will hinder the public and social stability. Also, Islamic ruling does not allow magnifying anything for any purpose. Why? Because it is injustice for the minorities to be stereotyped. It is unjustice for the public to gain unnecessary fear. It is unjustice for the children to grow up watching and playing violence.

Islam has come to serve justice to God (to worship him as the only God) and to serve justice to makind (to lift oppression from one another).

Islam is peace for you and me.

No hate, no fear, no greed,

Basem
PS: The vast portion of Muslims don't really know what they have. The west figured it out, and since the early days, Islam is under attack by ALL unjust rulers who's special interest is ruled out with Islam. Islam is bitter enemy for injustice and oppression. It is a dream come true for all people around the world. You guys have no idea how beatiful it is.

AΔΩNHΣ: Oι αναλογίες και οι αρχές. Eκ.

― Tι δώρο θέλεις να σου κάνω...;

Aπό ποιο διάστημα,

Hello Ergotelina!

quem me defenderá do opressor

Islam Unveiled: Disturbing Questions About the World's Fastest Growing Faith

The book's cover displays a chilling photograph of the eyes of Mohammed Atta, one of the Islamic terrorist hijackers involved in the September 11 2001 atrocities. A fitting lead into this study of Islam and the underlying hatred behind these and other acts of terrorism.

To bracket Islam and peace is just wishful thinking with reference to the Islamic fighting against it's neighbours along the perimeter of the Islamic world, citing the violence against Hindus in India, Communists & Buddhists, Chinese, Jews and Christians. Whereever there be violence, there be Islam it seems.

Islamic `tolerance' of other religions is also studied with reference to the Quranic statement that `anyone who converts from Islam to Christianity deserves to die'.

Numerous incidents are mentioned where those refusing to convert to Islam have been instantly executed on the spot.

Many defenders of Islam say it is a religion of peace.
Islam is not the Arabic word for peace - it means surrender or submission.

Kalimera, Ergotelina.

Freed hostages say THEY WERE FORCED TO CONVERT TO ISLAM.

GAZA (Reuters) - Militants in the Gaza Strip released two kidnapped journalists from the American Fox News Channel on Sunday after the men appeared on a videotape saying they had converted to Islam, Fox said.

Fox said correspondent Steve Centanni, a 60-year-old American, and New Zealand-born cameraman Olaf Wiig, 36, were in a hotel in the Palestinian coastal strip.

They hugged colleagues inside the hotel lobby before running up the stairs to a higher floor, Fox News footage showed.

"Our heroes are home," Fox anchorman Shepard Smith said in a live broadcast from New York.

The two reporters were seized on August 14 by a previously unknown group called the Holy Jihad Brigades.

In a videotape released earlier, Centanni and Wiig were shown separately sitting cross-legged, reading statements announcing that they had converted to Islam. At times in the video they were wearing long Muslim robes.

"I changed my name to Khaled. I have embraced Islam and say the word Allah," Centanni said.

Wiig called on leaders of the West to stop "hiding behind the 'I don't negotiate with terrorists' myth". Continued...

@They don't suprise me. you should know that there are a lot of rabbis with alot of diffrent opinions.
Well in case of Yesha, they are small minority (mainly settlers). politicaly they are ultra-right. I could only imagine how horrific it could be if they actually controled this war.
One soldier from them, even went to jail, after refusing to fight for a goverment that will evacute them from their home (a settlment). Some of them are even bound to fight israel when we pull out of the west-bank.
To me they are extreimist like HEZ. They dont get much sympathy from the majorty of the Israeli's, thou.

4.The leftists and the Arabs from
Israel(18%) are the key to the solution.
Those people struggle for peace
and many of them were jailed.
Their protests against the
Settlers helped israeli government
to pull out of the west-bank.

The Future is with peacemakers

over 30 comments here, all from lina. she cannot give me ONE COMMENT that is pro-West. Even for the reporters abused by terrorists--no feelings from lina

I make easy for you: how your feelings for those killed by Islamic terrorists?

Just answer without giving examples, stories, other questions. Don't answer by saying "west kills too"

But brave, brave if can be-answer, how you feel about terrorists killing westerners. there have been a lot.

I think you not brave to answer honestly. You will reply with fancy words and logic, with stories, links--but cannot give your FEELINGS for westerns killed by ISLAMIC TERRORISTS.

Why? because you have none

Ergotelina! This space caught fire!I do believe in dialog and negotiation.I think that men should evolve to a non-fighting conflict solving process.(Dream on...)Imagine our future.Conflicts being solved through war. This must change. It can't be this way forever or one day man will be fighting with stones and sticks, like Einstein said.I believe that it will be impossible to end conflicts,so we must learn how to solve it on the table.Although we have a past that shows clearly that men has beligerant nature.

I do believe in getting both sides of a story. But in many situations many obstacles(goals?!) get in the way.Comunication is tricky,it's called rumour. But I can think of another word like manipulation.I often question information I(we)access.Information has become such an important issue these days.
Many times I question if East and West is making any attempt to understand each other.Or to really negotiate peace.Sometimes I think that peace is what ordinary people wants, not leaders...Leaders prefer to be in the process of making peace... mainly through war...

Believe it or not, ergotelina is as pro western as a few other people in Greece. Showing sympathy for the west in greece is like digging your own's popularity's grave.

Bias against the west goes back in centuries and that's not easy to change. This, however, doesn't mean that "we" are pro east. If we were so then we'd have allowed, like all western countries did, muslims to have at least one mosque built in the capital, Athens.

Greeks think very high of themselves but at the same time they suffer from inferiority syndrome, when comparing Greece to western civilisation which outpaced the greek one long time ago.

Choose one:

1. Feel bad westerners get killed by Islamic terrorists.

2. Love that westerners get killed by Islamic terrorists.

3. Indifferent that westerners get killed by Islamic terrorists.

Why so scared to actually tell us your feelings?

This Poet deserves the Nobel for what he said in the interview
http://www.memritv.org/Transcript.asp?P1=1076

"You can be arrested for writing an article.

In the Koran itself, it says that Allah listened to his first enemy, Satan, and Satan refused to obey him. I believe that Allah was capable of wiping out Satan, yet He listened to Satan's refusal to obey Him.
At the very least, we demand that Muslims today listen to people with different opinions.
We have become extinct. We have the quantity. We have the masses of people, but a people becomes extinct when it no longer has a creative capacity, and the capacity to change its world.

The Muslims today - forgive me for saying this - with their accepted interpretation [of the religious text] are the first to destroy Islam, whereas those who criticize the Muslims - the non-believers, the infidels, as they call them - are the ones who perceive in Islam the vitality that could adapt it to life. These infidels serve Islam better than the believers."

Hi there. Thanks for your intelligent observation on Canadian politics in my blog. I just left a partial answer in my blog about the possibility of an adoption of a common currency in North America.

I understand that it's our wish, as Westerners, to see the Muslim countries become democratic. However, by using force in order to ask them to do so, we're also giving them reasons to hate our philosophy and culture because they might think that a democracy in their country will help the West to control its interest in the Middle East. As far as we know, most Western nations didn't become democratic with foreign interference. Have a nice day!

Nearby to Adonis
is another Arab psychanalist Gehad Mazarweh whom i have already posted in
http://ergotelina.blogspot.com/2006/08/wafa-sultana-woman-against-islam.html
,who
criticizes the Arab society
..............................
Interesting thoughts...

Gehad Mazarweh says some things that may not please Arab ears."The Arab world is still governed by myths and prejudices. Academic education and learning have had very little influence on people's thinking. Arab education is based on obedience, adaptability and a constant effort to fulfill the desires and expectations of the authorities. This type of education leaves clear signs of insecurity, lack of initiative, lack of self-esteem, fear of failure, apathy, docility and fear of innovation.
"When I see the demonstrations in Israel saying, No more war! I ask myself when similar processes will finally take place in Arab countries as well. Have you ever heard about a demonstration in Jordan, or in Syria or Egypt? The time has come for us to face the truth. We've been lying to ourselves for too many years."
Such views have already led Mazarweh to be accused of self-hatred. "There can be no reform of Arab society unless we open ourselves up to a new path," he says. "It's a process that will last for generations, but we must begin. We can't go on pinning the responsibility for our miserable situation on others. Yes, there is discrimination in Israel, but who's stopping the people in Taibe from cleaning the streets, for instance? You should see how filthy it is there. Every time I come back to visit, Taibe looks worse. It depresses me because in my father's time, Taibe was a paradise. Mention Taibe anywhere today and anyone will tell you that it's a disaster. Murder, prostitution, drugs, all the world's ailments have come together here. You look around and you're probably impressed with the cars and the villas. I'm not. I'm familiar with the discrimination in Israel. I'm horrified to keep hearing every day that they're threatening us with transfer. But the government isn't the only one responsible for the crime and neglect in Taibe. We have a big part in it, too."

BOTH SIDES NOW

PeaceMan, This I believe...

I believe in Democracy and one of the most beautiful American creations - The Bill of Rights

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

That helps both you and ETL.

Having said that, This I also believe...

I don't believe in sticking The Bill of Rights and the dictionary definition of "Democracy" at the end of an M-16 and shoving it down someone's throat.

(There. In one post, I was both pro-American and anti-American)

If ETL's goal is to stimulate debate and create a bridge of understanding between the West and the rest of the world...then she's doing a good job.

"In Italy for 30 years the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed. They produced Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and peace. And what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

--Graham Greene, novelist

Hello Ergotelina!
Yesterday I watch The thin red line, Terence Mallick's movie (i's an old movie) focusing on the conflict at Guadalcanal during the second World War.An important character is a greek named Staros.I remembered my Blogger greek friends. The movie is complex in its own narrative language. It makes it difficult but very interesting and unique. Also it strongly sugeests that life is made out of good and evil.It shows how a young man is changed into a war machine in order to preserve civilization. It's pretty strong but there's plenty of symbolism and beauty amongst violence...

Hello again! My beautifull Monday brought me a new pair of eye glasses and an hour of sun in the beach. This is the time when I start to get anxious about the end of Summer because the wind starts to blow cold...I get depressed in Winter, see.

Things are more quite in here.Don't worry Ergotelina.I don't think that your blog is pro or anti anything.Although I'm new to it it seems like an open space to debate important issues. You give some pretext and visitors comment.Main problem is that some of your visitors are to passionate about discussion.I am sorry but I am not like that.Mostly because I'm not so well documented as I wish in international politics. But also because it never was my predilection to go deeper on these matters.

I was quite passionate about movies some 10 years ago.Knew a lot about it, I mean motion pictures' history and so.I watched thousands of motion pictures.Honestly these days I'm not passionate about anything.I enjoy a lot of things in a moderate way!!!

I saw Koteas also in Contact,Tucker, a man and his dream, Gardens of Stone,Exotica and Crash...It seems he chooses well! These are good movies.

There was an Internacional Film Festival in this city and I saw greek films there although I can't remember anything about it.It ended. Also the Director died this year so probably it ended for good.It was the oldest International Film Festival in Portugal.

Did you like Alicia Keys'song, Fallin? She's a great singer and composer. And so very young!Aahhaah!I'm not a DJ but I like music of all kinds. From Puccini to Eminen, ehehehh!(Hei, when I was a child Demis Russus was a hit in Portugal.I think I remember a song he had with my name, Isabella...?!!!)

The name Adonis was given to Said by Antun Saada, the leader of the Syrian National Party, a quasi-fascist party that advocated Syrian dominance over a wide swath of the Middle East. In 1955 Said was imprisoned for six months for being a member of that party. Following his release from prison in 1956, he settled in Beirut, Lebanon, where in 1957 he and Syro-Lebanese poet Yusuf al-Khal founded the magazine Shi'r ("Poetry"). At this time, he abandoned Syrian nationalism in favor of pan-Arabism;
