Artists Without Borders

The war in Kosov@ caused approximately 800,000 refugees in neighboring Albania and Macedonia. About 200,000 more are still displaced inside ex-Yugoslavia (now Serbia and Montenegro) and thousands are feared dead. The NATO air strikes caused more than 1000 civilian deaths and killed an unknown number of Yugoslav military men.

Despite the presence of 37,500 NATO troops and UN peacekeepers (KFOR), revengeful attacks by returning Albanians have caused nearly 200 deaths and 150.000 Serb, Roma (Gypsy), Bosniak and Gorantsy refugees have left Kosov@. About 1,500 persons of Serb or Roma (Gypsy) ethnicity and about 3.000 of Albanians are still missing.

Moreover, ethnic unrest has also spread to the Preshevo valley and the border with Macedonia

Approximately two million children in ex-Yugoslavia have experienced the horror of war. They not only need medical care, food, water, etc. They also need psychological relief. Although their school process is returning to normalcy, they lack the most basic school materials.

ARTISTS WITHOUT BORDERS has been organizing a successful donation of art supplies and school materials by Japanese children. Japanese children have donated sketchbooks, colored pencils or crayons to an unknown Albanian, Serbian, Gypsy (Roma) or Goranets friend in Kosov@. On the first page Japanese children have attached a picture of themselves, made a colorful drawing and written a little message of support and solidarity to their unknown friend By expressing themselves, children have the opportunity to attain catharsis (spiritual purification) that is probably the most important function of art. Catharsis through art is an essential part of psychological (mental and emotional) healing. (read more)

yabancısın buralara nerelerden geliyorsun?/είσαι ξένος εδώ,από πού έρχεσαι;
rüzgârlığı anlat bana senin gibi esmeliyim/
bana esmeyi anlat bana sevmeyi anlat/bana esmeyi anlat esip geçmeyi anlat

Singer:Leman Sam

oh wind waving the foam of the open sea,oh wind whispering in the evening when my lantern shines.Blow inside my heart, scatter my sorrow.Teach me your blowing.Take me in your flying.
The daybreak may find me in your etherial arms

Sille is a small Turkish village, near the town of Konya.

Sille (it is pronounced like 'silli') was one of the few villages where the Cappadocian Greek language was spoken until 1922. It was inhabited by Greeks who had been living there in peaceful coexistence with the nearby Turks of Konya, for over 800 years.

The reason for this peaceful coexistence was the persian-seljuq,sufi-mystic Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi, who was the witness of a miracle that happened at the nearby Orthodox Christian monastery of Saint Chariton. In the Turkish language the monastery is now called AkMonastir and is translated as, "White Monastery". Jalal al-Din Rumi constructed a small mosque inside the Saint Chariton monastery; he asked the Turks not to hurt the Greeks of the village, and assigned to the Greek villagers the task of cleaning his own tomb. The Turks respected Mevlana's commandment. Several firmans from the Sultan were send to Konya Turks, which reminded to them of their promise not to hurt the Sille villagers. The coexistence of Sille Greeks with the nearby Turks remained very peaceful, that is why the villagers managed to preserve for over eight centuries both their native Greek language and their Orthodox Christian religion.

In the population exchanges between Greece and Turkey (1923), Turkey and Greece decided to exchange population based on religion. After 1924, all Greek population left the village.

The monastery where the miracle took place, is now mostly demolished and since it is located in a military camp entrance is not allowed.

Stelios Kazantzidis/Στέλιος Καζαντζίδης was born at 33 Alaeas St, Nea Ionia in Athens. He was the first of two brothers born to Haralambos Kazantzidis (of Pontus roots) and Gesthimani Kazantzidis, who moved from what is now Western Turkey to Greece during the Greco-Turkish War.

He was orphaned at the age of 13 when his father, a member of the Greek Resistance, died after his capture and torture during the Nazi occupation of Greece. This forced Kazantzidis into employment, working as a baggage-carrier at Omonia Square and then for an interstate bus company, as a seller of roasted chestnuts at open markets, as a labourer at the Nea Ionia textile mills. His life changed when the owner of a factory, in the Perissos working district, gave him a guitar. He spent long hours playing music. His songs were full of pain, anguish and sorrow, echoing a country recovering from the wounds of war and of fellow country men and women leaving for a better life abroad.

Water Song(ماء maey oh maey)

produced by Melodic-Mnemonics/Circus guy
Melodic-Mnemonics started in 1989 when Iraqi-American Honors Harvard Grad T.H. Culhane (a.k.a. "Taha" Rassam) came back to the U.S.A. after a few years serenading orangutans and singing songs with local chieftans in jungle villages in Borneo and Sumatra, performing original political songs on Radio-Television Baghdad and attending acting school in London and Oxford. The polymathic "edutainer" decided to turn his attention to helping solve the education crisis in inner city schools in Los Angeles where the dissatisfaction of the marginalized youth in the "world's richest and most powerful nation" was manifesting itself in unabated poverty, violence, drug use, despair and gang activity.
and Wadi Environmental Science Centre in Egypt
a "sustainable development" and "industrial ecology" demonstration and training center dedicated to improving science education and fostering technology transfer so that Egypt can build a robust technical culture: a culture that can "imagineer" a bright future with environmentally sound economic growth. It is located on the desert road between the ancient Giza Pyramids and the world famous Library of Alexandria.

Metanastes-Immigrants in Athens

By the Greek Director Stathis Athanasiou-Γεννήθηκαν αλλού,τώρα απλώς θέλουν να ζήσουν μαζί μας(N.Ago)-

March 21 is a significant day in the struggle to eliminate racism. On this day in 1960, 70 peaceful demonstrators against apartheid were killed in Sharpeville, South Africa.
Six years later the United Nations declared this date the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Canada was one of the first countries to hold a nationwide March 21 Campaign and has done so since 1989.( it)

Zeugma is an ancient city of Commagene; currently located in the Gaziantep Province of Turkey . It is a historical settlement which is considered among the four most important settlement areas under the reign of the kingdom of Commagene. It was named for the bridge of boats, or zeugma,(yoke) which crossed the Euphrates there.

The ancient city of Zeugma was originally founded, as a Greek settlement by Seleucus I Nicator, one of the generals of the Alexander the Great, in 300 BC. King Seleucus almost certainly named the city Seleucia after himself; whether this city is, or can be, the city known as Seleucia on the Euphrates or Seleucia at the Zeugma is disputed. The population in the city was approximately 80,000.
In 64 BC Zeugma was conquered and ruled by the Roman Empire and with this shift the name of the city was changed into Zeugma, meaning "bridge-passage" or "bridge of boats". During the Roman rule, the city became one of the attractions in the region, due to its commercial potential originating from its geo-strategic location because the city was on the Silk Road connecting Antioch to China with a quay or pontoon bridge across the river Euphrates.

In the summer of 2000, one of the great frontier cities of the Roman Empire, the city of Zeugma, all but disappeared from the face of the Earth under the flood waters of a dam. In a bid to modernise, the Turkish government has embarked on one of the most ambitious engineering projects in the world, building a series of dams on the Euphrates over the past twenty years. Almost every dam threatens ancient remains that lie below in one of the most archaeologically rich regions of the world. The completion of the Birecik dam, featured in this film, has flooded the valley where Zeugma is buried. The city on the flat plain has entirely disappeared and the waters have now risen to cover 30% of the city on the hillside.

'Horizon' tells the story of the archaeologists' fifth and final visit, struggling to save what they could before the dam waters rose. It witnesses the uncovering of some of the most beautiful examples of Roman art ever found. The team’s discoveries at Zeugma caused an international outcry and further excavations were hurriedly put together.
The dam will not only erase much of Zeugma from history. It will also displace 30,000 people, mostly Kurds, from the villages they have lived in for generations. For many, the loss of Zeugma is a tragedy.(BBC)

(Gynaika-Woman) Nikos Kavvadias' poem

Dance upon the shark's wing-Χόρεψε πάνω στο φτερό του καρχαρία
Shake in the wind your tongue and go- Παίξε στον άνεμο τη γλώσσα σου και πέρνα
In some places they called you Judith, in some others Maria- Αλλού σε λέγανε Γιουδήθ, εδώ Μαρία
A snake and a moray eel are tearing each other apart on the rock-Το φίδι σκίζεται στο βράχο με τη σμέρνα

I've been in a hurry since I was a kid but now I am taking my time-Από παιδί βιαζόμουνα μα τώρα πάω καλιά μου
A ship's chimney left me in the world and it's whistling-Μια τσιμινιέρα με όρισε στον κόσμο και σφυρίζει
Your hand, that caressed my thinning hair- Το χέρι σου, που χάιδεψε τα λιγοστά μαλλιά μου,
it almost broke me down for a moment but now cannot affect me- για μια στιγμή αν με λύγισε σήμερα δε με ορίζει

The mezzaruola(the diver's hourglass) and the four-branched anchor have cracked- Το μετζαρόλι ράγισε και το τεσσαροχάλι
Raise the try-sail,young boy,to set out again to the open sea-Την τάβλα πάρε, τζόβενο, να ξαναπάμε αρόδο
What son of a bitch has cursed upon us and we have such a bad luck?- Ποιος σκύλας γιος μας μούτζωσε κι έχουμε τέτοιο χάλι,
so that old men and boys take the mickey out of us- που γέροι και μικρά παιδιά μας πήραν στο κορόιδο;

Painted, with red light shining on you-Βαμμένη.Να σε φέγγει κόκκινο φανάρι
Full of seaweeds and rosebuds, an amphibian fate-Γιομάτη φύκια και ροδάνθη,αμφίβια Μοίρα
Riding a horse with no saddle and bridle-Καβάλαγες ασέλωτο με δίχως χαλινάρι,
for the first time, in a cave in Altamira-πρώτη φορά σε μια σπηλιά στην Αλταμίρα

The seagull jumps to blind the dolphin-Σαλτάρει ο γλάρος το δελφίνι να στραβώσει
Why are you looking at me? Shall I remind you of where you saw me?- Τι με κοιτάς; Θα σου θυμίσω εγώ πού μ' είδες;
On the sand, I had twisted you upside down-Στην άμμο πάνω σ' είχα ανάστροφα ζαβώσει
that night when they were founding the pyramids- τη νύχτα που θεμέλιωναν τις Πυραμίδες

We walked together on the Chinese Wall-Το τείχος περπατήσαμε μαζί το Σινικό
Sailors from Ur,next to you, were fixing the slipway-Κοντά σου ναύτες απ' την Ουρ πρωτόσκαρο εβιδώναν
Among the bare swords at the Granicus battle-Ανάμεσα σε ολόγυμνα σπαθιά στο Γρανικό
you were pouring oil into the deep wounds of the Macedonian- έχυνες λάδι στις βαθιές πληγές του Μακεδόνα

Painted, with a sick light shining on you- Βαμμένη-Να σε φέγγει φως αρρωστημένο
You are thirsty for gold. Take, search, count- Διψάς χρυσάφι.
Here, next to you, I am staying still for years- Εδώ κοντά σου χρόνια ασάλευτος να μένω
until you turn to Fate, Death and Stone- ως να μου γίνεις, Μοίρα, Θάνατος και Πέτρα

Nikos Kavvadias (Greek: Νίκος Καββαδίας) (January 11, 1910February 10, 1975) was a Greek poet and writer; currently one of the most popular poets in Greece, who, used his travels around the world as a sailor, and the idealised life at sea and its adventures, as powerful metaphors for the escape of ordinary people outside the boundaries of reality. He was born in the small town of Nikolski Ousouriski, near Harbin , in the historic region of Manchuria, in the northern part of today's People's Republic of China. This fact, according to him, linked him emotionally to the Far East, expressed in his short story "Li" (published 1987). His parents were Greeks from the island of Cefalonia and as a young child he had the opportunity to travel extensively.

Bebe-malo,malo eres(domestic violence)

Apareciste una noche fría-you showed up in a cold night-εμφανίστηκες μια κρύα νύχτα
con olor a tabaco sucio y a ginebra-with a smell of filthy smoke and gin-με μυρωδιά απο βρωμικο καπνό και τζιν-
El miedo ya me recorría-the fear ran through me-ο φόβος ήδη με διαπερνούσε
mientras cruzaba los deditos tras la puerta-as I crossed the fingers behind the door-ενώ σταύρωνα τα δάχτυλα πίσω απ' την πόρτα.
Tu carita de niño guapo-your handsome boyish face-το όμορφο παιδικό σου πρόσωπο
se la ha ido comiendo el tiempo por tus venas-has been eaten by the time through your veins-εχει φαγωθεί απ' το χρόνο στις φλέβες σου
y tu inseguridad machista-and your chauvinist lack of confidence-και η αρσενική σου ανασφάλεια
se refleja cada día en mis lagrimitas-is reflected each day on my tears-αντανακλάται κάθε μέρα στα δάκρυα μου

Una vez más no por favor que estoy cansada y no puedo con el corazón-please not again,Ι am tired and my heart can't bear it anymore- όχι ξανά σε παρακαλώ,είμαι κουρασμένη,η καρδιά μου δεν αντέχει
no grites que los niños duermen-don't scream, the chidren are asleep-

Voy a volverme como el fuego-I am going to turn into fire-Θα γίνω σαν τη φωτιά
voy a quemar tu puño de acero-Ι am going to burn your fist of steel
y del morados de mis mejillas saldrá el valor para cobrarme las heridas-and from the bruises of my cheeks the courage will come out to avenge my wounds-

Malo, malo, malo eres-bad,bad you are-είσαι κακός,κακός
no se daña quien se quiere,no-one doesn't hurt whom one loves
tonto, tonto, tonto eres-dumb,du
no te pienses mejor que las mujeres-
don't think yourself superior than women-μη νομίζεις ότι είσαι ανώτερος απ' τις γυναίκες

El día es gris cuando tu estás(aquí)-the day turns grey, when you are(here)-η μέρα σκοτεινιάζει όταν έρχεσαι
y el sol vuelve a salir cuando te vas-and the sun comes out when you go-και ο ήλιος ανατέλλει όταν φεύγεις
y la penita de mi corazón yo me la tengo que tragar con el fogón-and my pain of heart I have to swallow in the stove-και τον πόνο της καρδιάς μου πρέπει να τον καταπίνω στην κουζίνα
mi carita de niña linda-my pretty little face-το όμορφο κοριτσίστικο μου πρόσωπο
se ha ido envejeciendo en el silencio-has been aged in the silence-έχει γεράσει στη σιωπή
cada vez que me dices puta-each time you call me a whore-
se hace tu cerebro más pequeño-your brain shrinks-

malo, malo eres-bad,bad you are-
malo eres, porque quieres..-bad because you want..-
malo, malo eres..
no me chilles, que me duele-don't shout at me,it hurts-

eres débil y eres malo-you are weak and mean-
y no te pienses mejor que yo ni que nadie-and don't think yourself superior than me or anyone
y ahora yo me fumo un cigarrito-now I smoke a cigarette-τώρα ανάβω ένα τσιγάρο

malo, malo eres,sí
malo, malo eres, siempre
malo, malo eres
