Money brings ..Peace(Muhammad Yunus nobel rocks)

Coming from one of the poorest countries of world, Bangladesh ,Mouhamad Yunus aroused an astonishing, silent revolution, that touches upon the fate of millions of humans and incites the interest of economists and politicians all over the world. His bank, Grameen(literally "Bank of the Villages"), lends money to the most deprived persons, to those that nobody provides a guarantee for repaying their debts - neither by their family

nor by their goods - and have been rejected completely by the traditional institutions, while a minimal loan gives again the courage and the dignity so that they reconstruct their life. Today, the success of Yunus method is spectacular not only in his country, where more than 10% of population profits from micro-credits (overwhelming majority are women) - with rate of repaying above 90% -, but also in other 57 nations,as USA, China,South Africa and France.A lot of organisms in entire the world are inspired by his idea and its develop. The autobiography of this unique human, whose activity and his thought exceeded economic, political and religious biases and achieved to create his dream. In order to overcome the poverty we need not only giant plans, we should also help the first ring of economic chain: the person - and revive his hope.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2006, divided into two equal parts, to Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank for their efforts to create economic and social development from below. Lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty. Micro-credit is one such means. Development from below also serves to advance democracy and human rights.
The 65-year-old economist said he would use part of his share of the $1.4 million award to create a company to make low-cost, high-nutrition food for the poor. The rest would go toward setting up an eye hospital for the poor in Bangladesh, he said. The food company, to be known as Social Business Enterprise, will sell food for a nominal price.

How Grameen works

Grameen Bank has 19,000 staff and 6.6 million borrowers. Most of its loans average at about $160 and borrowers repay in small weekly instalments. There is no collateral, and the money is used for people for self-employment or to generate income.

In some cases, a person seeking a loan must join a small group of borrowers. Only a few are given money to start out with, and as loans are repaid, other members get a chance to get loans.

The bank does not take legal attempts to get money back "unlike in the conventional system," Yunus said. Grameen says it will never charge interest if total interest charges exceed the amount that was loaned. For example, someone who takes a $10 loan will not pay more than $10 in interest. In addition, Grameen says it asks borrowers to adhere to social goals, such as educating their children, keeping a sanitary lifestyle and eating right.

But does it make money? The bank says it loaned out $610 million in 2005, a year in which it said it made more than $15 million. Grameen said its repayment rate is 99 per cent.

The money is being used for women to build businesses, from selling merchandise to offering cellphone services to villages that don't even have land lines.

The bank also has a program for beggars (it had faced criticism for not going after the poorest of the poor) who exist on a subsistence lifestyle. The program typically gives $8 to a beggar with no collateral and no demands for interest. Now, the program has reached 55,000 people with a cost of about $500,000.

With his half share of the $1.4 million winnings, Yunus said he would create a company that will provide nutritional food for the poor and to set up an eye hospital.

When asked about how he sees the future, Yunus has said he sees credit as a human right, and that giving everyone an opportunity will lead to a world free from poverty.

Or, as the Nobel committee sees its, "Every single individual on Earth has both the potential and the right to live a decent life. Across cultures and civilizations, Yunus and Grameen Bank have shown that even the poorest of the poor can work to bring about their own development."

The role of women

Over 96 percent of Grameen's borrowers are women. Many are illiterate.

Yunus has said that dealing directly with women is critical to making real change in rural society.

Bangladeshi woman (USAID)"Women are very cautious with the use of the money, but the men were impatient; they wanted to enjoy it right away. They will entertain friends, they will go to the movies, they will do whatever they could to enjoy for themselves personally. But women didn't look at it personally," he told the NewsHour.

"Women looked at it for the children, for the family and so on, and for the future."

Some traditionalists in largely Muslim Bangladesh have criticized the bank because it gives women more power in family relationships by making them the primary money-makers and encourages contact with men outside their immediate families.

Yunus said he will dedicate his share of the $1.4 million Nobel Peace award to creating a company to make low-cost, high-nutrition food and an eye hospital for the poor in Bangladesh.

In 1974, Professor Yunus's life took the greatest turn when a devastating famine occurred in the village of Jobra and an estimated 1.5 million people died of starvation. It was then that he discovered that the theories of economics he had studied could do nothing to help ease the poverty of his countrymen. Determined to help, Professor Yunus started a rural development project in conjunction with the University in Jobra. He later found his answers when he met a destitute 21-year old woman named Sufia Begum. Sufia worked long hours weaving baskets but still could not break out of the poverty cycle. Professor Yunus found that all Sufia needed was US22 cents to get herself and her family out of clutches of the moneylender who loaned her the money for her business with exorbitant interest. This inspired Professor Yunus to come up with the idea of first time loans to the poor from commercial banks. He then founded the micro-credit program, a financing system that made available small loan

The IDEA. The system of small loans was based on the idea of Muhammad Yunus that poor avail talents and skills but they do not have the occasions to develop.
The OWNERSHIP . Most extraordinary characteristic the bank Grameen it is that it belongs to poor that are lented by this, mainly women. The 94% of action of bank belongs to the borrowers and 6% rests in government of Bangladesh
. THE NUMBERS * 6,61 millions borrowers, the 97% women of * 2.185 subsidiary companies in 69.140 villages * 17.336 individuals personnel * 1,55% bad debt (world record) * 3,9 billions of Euros total sum of issuings
THE SYSTEM. The bank grants small loans to persons which do not have credibility in the traditional banking system. It does not require from the borrowers guarantees. THE BEGGARS . The Grameen grants micro-loans to beggars without no absolutely interest. The period of settlement is determined by beggar himself. The borrower is covered by free life insurance. In 2005, roughly 45.000 beggars they received such loans.
INSTITUTION GRAMEEN. It came out from the homonym bank in 1997 and today it allocates world network of 52 subsidiary companies in 22 countries, which has helped 11 millions persons in Asia, Africa,America and the Middle East.

"POOR", says Muhammad Yunus, "is like bonzai. It has a very small base in order to develope. Possibly he could become giant, but never will learn it in his poverty ".

The women in the Norwegian archipelag Lofoten, north, to Arctic Circle, were informed in time about Yunus and his Grameen. At ' 90s, the fish catches had been decreased considerably and the places of work in the industry of fish too. The banks did not gave them loans in order to begin their own enterprises (,textile workshops, manufactures...) because the bank judged either the guarantees insufficient either the loans too small. Then the women of Lofoten learned about the bank Grameen and they called Yunus to explain them his "system". So it was created in the islands Lofoten the KVINNENBANKEN, the Bank of Women, and from there it was extended in entire rich Norway . Today 60 teams of women exist that manage "shops of" bank equal in number. The Grameen created faculty and is represented, with various forms, in 50 countries of Third World and West. His Norwegian friends were glad for the Nobel Prize. Yunus writes in the "Mont", that has a dream the "right in the credit"to be included in human rights and mainly in those of women!

The official poverty rate in the U.S. has increased for four consecutive years, from a 26-year low of 11.3% in 2000 to 12.7% in 2004. This means that + 37.000.000 people + were below the official poverty thresholds in 2004. This is 5.4 million more than in 2000.

Ecumene said...

Why in the last years???

For example, poverty declined by an average of 2.29 percent in the Clinton years (a move in the right direction), and it grew by 4.33 percent annually in the Bush years (a move in the wrong direction). To make the decline a positive number and the growth a negative number, we have changed the indicator to poverty reduction. Thus, Clinton's score is plus 2.29 percent, and Bush's is minus 4.33 percent.3

ppionline.org

Bush's critics say that progress on poverty has stopped because the president has not invested much time in championing the issue. While Bush has been outspoken in his support of religious groups' efforts to combat social ills and has moved to shift federal money to their coffers, he has not shown much faith in the power of government to directly help the poor.
"The Bush administration has shown a total lack of leadership on this issue," said former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards, who has made a new war on poverty his signature issue as he travels the country in preparation for an expected 2008 presidential bid. "He has consistently opposed ideas that would help lift people out of poverty."
Edwards has called for tax credits for first-time home buyers and to help low-income workers establish savings accounts; expanded opportunities for college; and the creation of 1 million temporary government-subsidized jobs. Bush has hurt the poor, he said, with his long-standing opposition to increasing the minimum wage and expanding the earned income tax credit, which supplements the income of low-wage workers with a refundable tax credit.

"We've been talking about eradicating poverty in this country since the 1960s," said Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson. "We had the Great Society. If that had worked, we would not have had generation after generation of poverty. The president is trying to address this in a systematic way by addressing the elements that are needed to lift people out of poverty."

Deeper pockets

FreeCyprus said That's SIXTEEN BILLION!

The European Union and its member states pay out more than €30 billion a year in public aid to developing countries. This is the equivalent of 0.34% of GNP of the 25 member states, and is higher than the per capita aid levels of the United States or Japan.

Of this amount, more than €7 billion is channelled through the EU. Although EU members, like other industrialised countries, have accepted a target of spending 0.7% of their GNP on aid each year, only Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden have reached this target.

In May 2005, ministers from the 25 member states agreed to a new collective target of 0.56% for 2010, which would result in an additional €20 billion of aid by that time. They also set 2015 as the date for reaching 0.7%.

Most of the EU’s aid is in the form of non-repayable grants. A limited amount of soft loans and investment capital is made available by the European Investment Bank (EIB) the EU’s long-term funding body. The EIB made loans to partners outside Europe, mainly developing countries, worth €5.1 billion in 2005.

Over the years, the EU has funded thousands of development projects across the third world. Often relatively small amounts of cash go a long way. Recent success stories include a project to equip and train silk weavers in Cambodia, funding to help small businesses in Peru to export more, support for Namibian farmers to set up a lobby to defend their interests, a grant to a business venture in Senegal to improve the quality of local manufactured products, technical assistance to Egypt to eradicate a pest which threatened its vital potato exports to the EU, and many more.

When measured, poverty may be absolute or relative poverty.

The link you gave is about relative poverty

Absolute poverty refers to a set standard which is consistent over time and between countries. An example of an absolute measurement would be the percentage of the population eating less food than is required to sustain the human body (approximately 2000-2500 kilocalories per day).

The World Bank defines extreme poverty as living on less than US$ (PPP) 1 per day, and moderate poverty as less than $2 a day.

Poverty Wikipedia

The Human Poverty Index is an indication of the standard of living in a country, developed by the United Nations (UN). The UN considers this a better indicator than the Human Development Index, which in turn is considered a better indicator than the Gross Domestic Product

The human poverty index for developing countries (HPI-1)

The Human Development Reports website summarizes this as "A composite index measuring deprivations in the three basic dimensions captured in the human development index — a long and healthy life, knowledge and a decent standard of living." See [1] for the details of calculating this index.

AMERICANS do not go in for envy.

...........................
The gap between rich and poor is bigger than in any other advanced country, but most people are unconcerned...................

Whereas Europeans fret about the way the economic pie is divided, Americans want to join the rich, not soak them. Eight out of ten, more than anywhere else, believe that though you may start poor, if you work hard, you can make pots of money. It is a central part of the American Dream.
The political consensus, therefore, has sought to pursue economic growth rather than the redistribution of income, in keeping with John Kennedy's adage that “a rising tide lifts all boats.” The tide has been rising fast recently. Thanks to a jump in productivity growth after 1995, America's economy has outpaced other rich countries' for a decade. Its workers now produce over 30% more each hour they work than ten years ago. In the late 1990s everybody shared in this boom. Though incomes were rising fastest at the top, all workers' wages far outpaced inflation.
But after 2000 something changed. The pace of productivity growth has been rising again, but now it seems to be lifting fewer boats

All in all, America's income distribution is likely to continue the trends of the recent past. While those at the top will go on drawing huge salaries, those in the broad middle of the middle class will see their incomes churned. The political consequences will depend on the pace of change and the economy's general health. With luck, the offshoring of services will happen gradually, allowing time for workers to adapt their skills while strong growth will keep employment high. But if the economy slows, Americans' scepticism of globalisation is sure to rise. And even their famous tolerance of inequality may reach a limit.

Allah has Judged that there shall be no usury (interest) and that all interest due to Abbas Ibn Abd al Muttalib (the Prophet's uncle) shall henceforth be waived.

Beware of Satan for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O People,
It is true that you have certain rights in regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives, only under Allah's trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with anyone of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste.

The Quran forbids usury, not interest. Quite a few states in USA have laws against usury. Usury is defined as excessive interest. A Dictionary defines usury as "an excessive or inordinate premium for the use of money borrowed", "extortionate interest", or "the practice of taking exorbitant or excessive interest." The Arabic language also makes distinction between interest (Fa'eda) and usury (Reba). The Quran forbids Reba or usury.

Earning interest and paying interest is perfectly acceptable, as the Quran has not prohibited interest

Islamic economic institutions, not just the Islamic bank but all those connected with Islamic banking, claim to operate on the basis of "zero interest." Critics of Islamic economics argue, however, that the fundamental characteristic of charging interest (i.e. charging a premium, on the principal amount of a loan, for the time value of the loaned money) is not truly eliminated in Islamic banking, but rather the interest is merely hidden and relabeled

Thus, while the borrower from an Islamic bank is protected against interest rate increases, the borrower cannot benefit from interest rate drops.

In theory, Islamic banking should be synonymous with Full-Reserve banking (the opposite is fractional-reserve banking) with banks achieving a 100% reserve ratio. However in practice this is rarely the case.

Social welfare, unemployment, public debt and globalization have been re-examined from the perspective of Islamic norms and values. Islamic banks have grown recently in the Muslim world but are a very small share of the global economy compared to the Western debt banking paradigm. It remains to be seen if they will find niches - although hybrid approaches, e.g. Grameen Bank which applies classical Islamic values but uses conventional lending practices, are much lauded by some proponents of modern human development theory.

And like communism, Islam believes the collective must be preserved at the expense of the individual. We are social beings first, individuals second.

Like communism, Islamism promises a better life for the poor, oppressed and alienated. It is cloaked in God, but its essence is strongly secular. Unless the West fights the war of ideas at this level, offering a competing vision of morality as well as economics and technology, the lure of Islamic extremism will continue to flourish.

Φανταστείται μόνο μια τέτοια Τράπεζα στην Ελλάδα. Πόσες ...ώρες ζωής θα της δίνατε;

Είναι άραγε τυχαίο που η «φιλελευθεροποίηση» του αγροτικού τομέα στην Ινδία συνέπεσε με τις εξαγγελίες της Ινδικής κυβέρνησης ότι θα προωθήσει την καλλιέργεια GTO (μεταλλαγμένων) ως δήθεν «λύση» στο πρόβλημα της ...μειωμένης παραγωγικότητας; Από την ίδια πόρτα που άνοιξε για να μπουν οι GTO μπήκε και το επιδοτούμενο αμερικάνικο βαμβάκι. Να λοιπόν, που το πρόβλημα της φτώχειας δεν είναι ζήτημα τρόπων χρηματοδότησης. Τι να το κάνεις το δάνειο αν σου στερούνται τα μέσα να το αποπληρώσεις;

Audiatur altera pars neolibertariana

1995

The MICRO-CREDIT CULT
by Jeffrey Tucker

In the story of Rumpelstiltskin, an evil dwarf saves the life of a king's bride by spinning flax into gold. But the price is high for performing this seeming miracle. She must give the dwarf her first-born child.

Grameen Bank's ideal customersThe story could be an allegory for the "micro-credit" movement, the current enthusiasm of the political Left here and abroad. It promises credit for poor people with no savings or collateral. A closer look, however, shows the movement to be financially dangerous, subtly coercive, and, in its most famous case, an enemy to children and families.

The micro-credit movement got a big boost at the summer 1995 UN world conference on women. The person who received the largest round of applause was not Hillary Clinton or Bella Abzug. It was a banker, and a man no less: Bangladesh economist Muhammad Yunus.

"Capital does not need to be the handmaiden only of the rich," Yunus announced in Beijing. "Access to credit should be a human right irrespective of economic situation." In July this year, the House Committee on International Relations sat in awe as Yunus made similar promises to politicians who should know better.

Yunus runs Bangladesh's Grameen Bank, the most politically correct bank in the world. The literature on him is hagiographic in the extreme..

Consider the treatment of dowries, a traditional transfer of property between families on the occasion of a marriage. For many countries, prohibiting them would be the equivalent of criminalizing the diamond engagement ring. But Grameen's "Sixteen Decisions" calls the dowry "a curse" and makes borrowers swear "we shall not take any dowry in our sons' weddings, neither shall we give any dowry in our daughters' weddings." ……..
Borrowers with children are strongly "encouraged" to send them to one of 18,000 "feeder schools" from a very young age. There they are taught with Grameen textbooks that promote the Sixteen Decisions. People who work for the bank must also demonstrate loyalty to the Sixteen Decisions. ………..
All this suggests the Grameen Bank is more of a cult than a financial institution. But let's consider its financial claims more carefully. ……………

Meanwhile, your private life is gone. The Grameen staff is in charge of your family size and the workings of your latrines. Your friends must be Grameenites. You chant the Sixteen Decisions ad nauseam and attend tedious exercise sessions and parades. If you're single, the prohibition on dowries limits your marital prospects. If you're married with children, your children are farmed out to Grameen Day Care. You can't have any more if you want to. Plus, you must periodically abandon your primary occupation to dig around in the dirt planting tree seedlings to please international agencies………….

Agree or disagree with Grameen's femino-socio-financial engineering, there's no economic miracle worth copying in the Grameen model. At best, its operations are wasteful and Ponzi-like; at worst, they are parasitical, usurious, and communistic. This bank would not be viable apart from the government subsidies and financial trickery, facts which prove that its grandiose claims are false. The Grameen Bank's fame is a consequence of its far-leftist social agenda, not its economic successes…...

Criticism

Gina Neff of the Left Business Observer has described the microcredit movement as a privatization of public safety-net programs. Enthusiasm for microcredit among government officials as an anti-poverty program can motivate cuts in public health, welfare, and education spending. Neff maintains that the success of the microcredit model has been judged disproportionately from a lender's perspective (repayment rates, financial viability) and not from that of the borrowers. For example, the Grameen Bank's high repayment rate does not reflect the number of women who are repeat borrowers, and have become dependent on loans for household expenditures rather than capital investments. Studies of microcredit programs have found that women often act merely as collection agents for their husbands and sons, such that the men spend the money themselves while women are saddled with the credit risk. As a result, borrowers are kept out of waged work and pushed into the informal economy.

Another group of critics[citation needed] believe that traditional schemes of credit for the poor, such as pawn shops and payday loans, are more effective, and claim that many microcredit schemes are simply disguised charity rather than an effective business model.
Bangladesh's Finance and Planning Minister M. Saifur Rachman has pointed out that some microfinance institutions charge excessive interest rates.

Some other problems that have been reported with microcredit:

* Turning a profit on the loan
* Inability to reach the poorest of the poor
* Microcredit dependency
* Durability of poverty reduction
* Excessive political interference to gain a vote bank

I couldn't quite believe how ridiculous this was when I first heard about it. Then I heard an interview with the guy. He thinks poverty is a really terrible thing. Apparently it's a waste of human potential [groundbreaking stuff]. And his solution - you lend people minute (or "micro") amounts of money, so that they can become some kind of entrepreneur or something.

well, for me it was ridiculous on a number of levels:
1) the idea that poverty exists because a public policy initiative to tackle it hasn't been created yet
2) that poverty is seen as an unfortunate incident in some parts of the world, rather than the effect of a concsious attempt by some to become rich at the expense of others
3) that the cause for poverty was a lack of entrepreneurialism
4) that entrepreneurs could be creatd in the midst of poverty - I mean, who the hell do they sell the things to!?
5) that the whole scheme itself is justified by the argument that poverty is a social bad - as if all we need to do is to convince the powerful that they would in fact benefit from a world of peace and love and they'll gladly share their wealth in the name of social harmony

.................
felix frost wrote:
Also, I doubt if many recipients of micro loans are going to end up as capitalists.
so do I. but I'm sure some will try, which is yet another defeat for social solidarity...............

But I see no recognition of the fact that it's the logic of capitalism that has created the situation, and an attempt to employ the logic of capitalism to solve it.
It sounds like Blair-style social democracy to me!

Laily Begum and her husband Atiqullah, a day labourer, had started their lives in poverty, like millions of other people in the country. They did not have enough to eat and lived in a tiny house, in Patira, a village in Dakshin Khan, on the outskirts of Dhaka city.

Laily Begum was encouraged by her husband to join Grameen Bank (GB), the institution that pioneered micro-credit. At first she took a BDT 4,500 loan from GB for buying a cow. By selling milk, she started earning some extra cash, which was still not sufficient for meeting her family's subsistence needs. Laily took a further BDT 6,000 loan for buying a second cow.

In 1997, with encouragement from the local Grameen Bank branch manager, Laily Begum applied for a mobile phone to become the first Village Phone Lady.

Borrowers of Grameen Bank at present own 94 per cent of the totalequity of the bank. Remaining 6 percent is owned by the government.

Low Interest Rates

Government of Bangladesh has fixed interest rate for government-run microcredit programmes at 11 per cent at flat rate. It amounts to about 22 per cent at declining basis. Grameen Bank's interest rate is lower than government rate.

There are 4 interest rates for loans from Grameen Bank :

-20% (declining basis) for income generating loans,
- 8% for housing loans,
-5% for student loans,
- 0% (interest-free) loans for Struggling Members (beggars). All interests are simple interest, calculated on declining balance method. This means, if a borrower takes an income-generating loan of say, Tk 1,000, and pays back the entire amount within a year in weekly instalments, she'll pay a total amount of Tk 1,100, i.e. Tk 1,000 as principal, plus Tk 100 as interest for the year, equivalent to 10% flat rate.

1.0 Owned by the Poor
2.0 No Collateral, No Legal Instrument, No Group-Guarantee or Joint Liability
3.0 97 per cent Women
4.0 Branches
5.0 Over Tk 290 billion Disbursed
6.0 Recovery Rate 99 per cent
Loan recovery rate is 98.85 per cent.
7.0 100 per cent Loans Financed From Bank’s Deposits
8.0 No Donor Money, No Loans
9.0 Earns Profit
10.0 Revenue and Expenditure
11.0 Low Interest Rates
12.0 Deposit Rates
13.0 Beggars As Members

Begging is the last resort for survival for a poor person, unless he/she turns into crime or other forms of illegal activities. Among the beggars there are disabled, blind, and retarded people, as well as old people with ill health. Grameen Bank has taken up a special programme, called Struggling Members Programme, to reach out to the beggars. About 81,000 beggars have already joined the programme. Total amount disbursed stands at Tk. 68.44 million. Of that amount of Tk. 41.22 million has already been paid off.

Basic features of the programme are :

1)

Existing rules of Grameen Bank do not apply to beggar members; they make up their own rules.

2)

All loans are interest-free. Loans can be for very long term, to make repayment instalments very small. For example, for a loan to buy a quilt or a mosquito-net, or an umbrella, many borrowers are paying Tk 2.00 (3.4 cents US) per week.

3)

Beggar members are covered under life insurance and loan insurance programmes without paying any cost.

4)

Groups and centres are encouraged to become patrons of the beggar members.

5)

Each member receives an identity badge with Grameen Bank logo. She can display this as she goes about her daily life, to let everybody know that she is a Grameen Bank member and this national institution stands behind her.

6)

Members are not required to give up begging, but are encouraged to take up an additional income-generating activity like selling popular consumer items door to door, or at the place of begging.

Objective of the programme is to provide financial services to the beggars to help them find a dignified livelihood, send their children to school and graduate into becoming regular Grameen Bank members. We wish to make sure that no one in the Grameen Bank villages has to beg for survival.
