P.S. not too long..In 1979 Birmingham elected Dr. Richard Arrington Jr. as its first African-American mayor.Furthermore,in the late 1970s the governor George Wallace became a born-again Christian, and apologized to black civil rights leaders for his earlier segregationist views, calling these views wrong.
