A Sarcastic Muslim Song of Damir Nikšić(If I wasn't a Muslim..)

If I wasn’t Muslim-Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.-If I wasn’t born Mohammedan Life for me would have been fun.I could live and prosper. On my land and I could even build a bigger house.I wouldn’t have to, every now and then,Run and hide like a mouse. If I wasn’t Muslim. My neighbors wouldn’t set my home on fire. And surround me with barbed wire.I wouldn’t live in terror. Books wouldn’t teach you that I was an error. In European history. I would not have to prove that I am not stupid.A backward and primitive villain. An alien threat to your way of life to be hunted down.I wouldn’t be so ashamed of the names of my relatives and mine.Of the Semitic language I speak to my God.That no one here understands. My tradition wouldn’t insult. My Christian neighbors and friends. My diet, my cap, the Ramadan fast.the crescent and the star.Bayram, I know, will never be famous like Christmas or Easter Sunday so modern and cool, so western, and - oh so “secular”.If I wasn’t Muslim. If I had an ordinary Slavic Christian name.If I wasn’t circumcised. If I could eat my eggs with ham.I would be accepted.Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.I’d blend in to Europe and enjoy.I wouldn’t be its whipping boy.– oh boy –If I were a Christian I wouldn’t have to prove that I am human too.'Cause when you’re Christian you’re always civilized no matter what you wear or do.But when you are a Muslim. It is really hard to find some sympathy for you.No one really likes you, no one really cares. No one wants to know your point of view.If I wasn’t Muslim. If I was a part of Christendom Europe would be my sweet home.I wouldn’t have to worry. What will happen in a year or two. Will I have to leave or stay and dieDrop my pants to be identified and put aside.Just ‘cause I’m a Mussulman?

My name is Damir Niksic and I'm a Bosnian artist from Sarajevo. The
best part of my job is to try to articulate my--and--my--my own
feelings, my own emotions, my own thoughts and to succeed in
communicating them to other people.
I came back after the war because I wanted to be a pioneer... if--if
that still exists; I wanted to come here and work and rebuild this
city and rebuild a new society--new world, new--new Sarajevo, new
Bosnia in--in the best possible way.
Sarajevo can be considered as a--as a European Jerusalem; it has a
long tradition of all three [inaudible] religions. Bosnian Serbs are
Orthodox, Christians; [inaudible] are Catholic Christians, while
Bosnian Muslims are Muslims, but we call ourselves [Bosniaks]; that's
our nationality in secular terms.
We all love Bosnia and consider Bosnia our--our country. These people
belong to a long tradition of tolerance. Neighbors here are--are
natural born neighbors.
Right now we are searching for an identity but everybody is doing that
everywhere in the world. That's a constant process. Each group wants
to--to define this new modern European identity. I have my own
identity; I have my own history; I have my own world and my own
country and my city and I think that that's important to--to
communicate.
My [piece/peace] is introducing myself; I'm a [Bosniak]--Bosnian
Muslim. I don't want to be type-casted and labeled and judged as some
kind of Muslim which is defined by--by some other people, some other
groups.
If I wasn't Muslim... if I wasn't born Mohammed [Han], life for me
would have been fun.
Mixing humor with tragedy is always risky, but I had good feedback
from the audience and I think that everybody understood what was my
intention.
Bosnian identity before the war was a singer--was a [lover]. Bosnians,
of course because of the war, became fighters. I would like to bring
Bosnians back to [inaudible]--to love, to expressing themselves
through their song. I really want to evoke healing powers within these
people and--and I think that to laugh is the best medicine.
But when you are a Muslim, it is really hard to find some sympathy for
you. No one really likes you; no one really cares; no one wants to
know your point of view.
I don't want Sarajevo to export its conflicts; I want Sarajevo to
export its--its solutions…

Some Commons between Muslims,Bogomils and Protestants

(((The Bogomils
The Early Protestants of the East.)))

[[[[Bogomilism is the Gnostic dualistic sect, the synthesis of Armenian Paulicianism and the local Slavonic Church reform movement in Bulgaria and Bosnia-Herzegovina between 950 and 1396 and in the Byzantine Empire between 1018 and 1186.]]]]

(denial of trinity and the Christian cross)

The Bogomils refused to fast on Mondays and Fridays. They rejected monachism. They declared Christ to be the Son of God only through grace like other prophets, and that the bread and wine of the eucharist were not transformed into flesh and blood; that the last judgment would be executed by God and not by Jesus; that the images and the cross were idols and the veneration of saints and relics idolatry.

they denied the divine birth of Christ, the personal coexistence of the Son with the Father and Holy Ghost, and the validity of sacraments and ceremonies. They rejected the title of theotokos (mother of God), and refused all veneration to Mary. The miracles performed by Jesus were interpreted in a spiritual sense, not as real material occurrences; the Church was the in-tenor spiritual church in which all held equal share. Baptism was only to be practised on grown men and women. The Bogomils repudiated infant baptism, and considered the baptismal rite to be of a spiritual character neither by water nor by oil but by self-abnegation, prayers and chanting of hymns.

If I were Rich Man ...

Tevye’s monologue from Fiddler on the Roof
[TEVYE]
Chaim Topol (Hebrew:
sings

"Dear God, you made many, many poor people.
I realize, of course, that it's no shame to be poor.
But it's no great honor either!
So, what would have been so terrible if I had a small fortune?"

If I were a rich man,
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.

I'd build a big tall house with rooms by the dozen,
Right in the middle of the town.
A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below.
There would be one long staircase just going up,
And one even longer coming down,
And one more leading nowhere, just for show.

I'd fill my yard with chicks and turkeys and geese and ducks
For the town to see and hear.
And each loud "cheep" and "swaqwk" and "honk" and "quack"
Would land like a trumpet on the ear,
As if to say "Here lives a wealthy man."

If I were a rich man,
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.

I see my wife, my Golde, looking like a rich man's wife
With a proper double-chin.
Supervising meals to her heart's delight.
I see her putting on airs and strutting like a peacock.
Oy, what a happy mood she's in.
Screaming at the servants, day and night.

The most important men in town would come to fawn on me!
They would ask me to advise them,
Like a Solomon the Wise.
"If you please, Reb Tevye..."
"Pardon me, Reb Tevye..."
Posing problems that would cross a rabbi's eyes!
And it won't make one bit of difference if i answer right or wrong.
When you're rich, they think you really know!

If I were rich, I'd have the time that I lack
To sit in the synagogue and pray.
And maybe have a seat by the Eastern wall.
And I'd discuss the holy books with the learned men, several hours every day.
That would be the sweetest thing of all.

If I were a rich man,
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.

Emir Kusturica was born a muslim, as it is denoted by his first name (Emir). Goran Bregović is the son of a Croat and a Serbian (like many many other ex-Yugoslavians).

What a pity that a country which for many years was a model of the peaceful co-existence of diverse ethnicities dissolved in such a brutal way...

The story of Kusturica reflects
the identity-clash...

Emir Nemanja Kusturica

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kusturica a great film-maker remains a controversial figure

On Đurđevdan (St. George's Day) in 2005 Emir, a long time atheist, was baptised into the Serb Orthodox Church as Nemanja Kusturica. The baptism took place in Savina monastery near Herceg Novi, and his godfather was Vladimir Čukavac, a forester from Mokra Gora, Serbia. To his Bosnian Muslim critics this was the final betrayal of his Muslim roots (Bosnian writer Mile Stojić (Bosnian Croat) said: "... it shall be written that Kusta was the first Orthodox Christian in modern history whose father's name was Murat". Murat, and the director's first name, Emir, are overtly Muslim.

This is what Emir says about this: "My father was an atheist and he always described himself as a Serb. OK, maybe we were Muslim for 250 years, but we were Orthodox before that and deep down we were always Serbs, religion cannot change that. We only became Muslims to survive the Turks.

Well obviously, after he got married with his Serbian wife he decided to change his religion to orthodox. He only became Orthodox to survive his wife? He never had a problem with his religion until the war came, and when he married a serbian wife. Now after he's married his wife she obviously did everything she can to make him a real Serb.

money talks, true

ok if i have to answer if he is disdained for being poor or muslim, if i really really have to choose one, it would be that it is because he is poor, the muslim identity is then attached and taking a negative meaning, a bit like being poor and black in the us

but again in the us if you are poor and white your negative image does not really drop as much as being black-from-the-ghetto...and poor whites are not so much concentrated in ghettos...although they might be more than the black poor...so it 'helps' that the guy is muslim that he is disdained i think

Muslims of the world are among the poorest of the poor.

Muslims are 22 percent of the world population and produce less than five percent of global GDP.

Why Muslims are Poor? What is the reason?

I am fed up with people who blame
everybody except themselves

Here is where I thought he is going to tell it like it is and make it clear that Islam is the cause of it all. But you will be surprised to see what were Dr. Saleem's diagnoses:

Diagnosis 1: Muslims are poor, illiterate and weak because they have 'abandoned the divine heritage of Islam'. Prescription: We must return to our real or imagined past.

Diagnosis 2: Muslims are poor, illiterate and weak because we have refused to change with time.

"We only became Muslims to survive the Turks".

but I am really interested
in learning more..

It was not a paradise,anyway..

The following hundred years were marked by further military failures, numerous revolts within Bosnia, and several outbursts of plague.[1] The Porte's efforts at modernizing the Ottoman state were met with great hostility in Bosnia, where local aristocrats stood to lose much through the proposed reforms.[1] This, combined with frustrations over political concessions to nascent Christian states in the east, culminated in a famous (albeit ultimately unsuccessful) revolt by Husein Gradaščević in 1831.[3] Related rebellions would be extinguished by 1850, but the situation continued to deteriorate. Later agrarian unrest eventually sparked the Herzegovinian rebellion, a widespread peasant uprising, in 1875. The conflict rapidly spread and came to involve several Balkan states and Great Powers, which eventually forced the Ottomans to cede administration of the country to Austria-Hungary through the treaty of Berlin in 1878
Ottoman era

Taxation
During the Ottoman period, the Christians were treated as "dhimmis" by the Ottoman authorities but were otherwise subject to the same restrictions as the Muslim subjects. Dhimmis were not required to join the army, but they paid a special tax called jizya (glavarina in Bosnia). Due to the constant border wars with the Catholic countries (Croatia, Austria, Hungary) as opposed to already occupied Orthodox countries (Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece), the Catholics were looked upon slightly less favorably than the Orthodox.
During Ottoman rule, many Christian children, regardless of whether Orthodox or Catholic, were kidnapped from their families and raised to be members of the Janissary Corps (this practice was known as the devşirme system, 'devşirmek' meaning 'to gather' or 'to recruit'). It was also known as the “blood tax” among the Christians, who would often hide their children or even in some cases cut their fingers so that Turks wouldn’t take them away.

Αναφορικά με το "It was not a paradise,anyway.."

Neither West or Eastern Roman nor Ottoman empire were paradises

Things are more complicated

The devshirmeh was similar to a system used by earlier Islamic dynasties, such as the Abbasids who used slaves to build armies — especially guard troops — intended to be loyal to the ruler and thus provide a steady pool of manpower that was outside of local politics, but in many cases they ended up supporting or staging coups. This also has a basis in the Quran, surat 8, verse 41, which provides for the enlistment a fifth of the campaign captives.

The descendants of these slaves would form the Mamluk dynasties. Despite the intentions of the Abbasid rulers, the Mamluks would eventually grow in power, reducing the Caliph to a virtual puppet.

The devshirmeh was an outgrowth of this system, but it also proved to be more efficient and effective at achieving its goals. Under the Ottomans, the system was first instituted by Murad I who needed a large pool of manpower from which the Sultan could build armies to fight in seemingly never-ending wars on many fronts and put down insurrections

Janissaries’ reputation increased to the point that by 1683, Sultan Mehmet IV abolished the devshirmeh as increasing numbers of originally Muslim Turkish families had already enrolled their own sons into the force hoping for a lucrative career. Recent events....

The "moderate parties" forged ahead of the nationalists in the presidential and general elections which took place on 1st October in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The leader of the Party for Bosnia-Herzegovina (SB-H), former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Haris Silajdzic won his wager by clinching the election of the Collegial Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina with 62.10% of the vote within the Muslim college. Nebojsa Radmanovic (Independent Social Democrat Party, SNSD) was elected by the Serb College with 54.80% of the vote whilst Zeljko Komsic (Social Democrat Party, SDP) won 40.80% of the vote thereby winning the Croat College.

Zeljko Komsic, a surprise winner, appears to be a moderate whilst Haris Silajdzic and Nebojsa Radmanovic have different views of the country's future, the first being in favour of a united Bosnia-Herzegovina, whilst the second supports the idea of a referendum on the separation from the Serb Republic. Zeljko Komsic, rejected by part of the Croat community, who accuse him of lacking in moral authority and object to his election on the vote of the Serb and Muslim communities expressed his thoughts in Le Monde on 11th October: "The future will tell us whether I am an accident of history or the gateway to a multiethnic society in which I believe."
...............................

"These presidential and general elections have revealed the deep ethnic division in Bosnia-Herzegovina," maintained political analyst Tanja Topic. Indeed although the moderate parties led in the elections they disagree on the future of the country and the reforms to be adopted.
