Bargaining went on throughout the night. Churchill wrote on a scrap of paper that Stalin had a 90 percent "interest" in Romania, Britain a 90 percent "interest" in Greece, both Russia and Britain a 50 percent interest in Yugoslavia. When they got to Italy, Stalin ceded that country to Churchill. The crucial questions arose when the Ministers of Foreign Affairs discussed "percentages" in Eastern Europe. Molotov's proposals were that Russia should have a 75 percent interest in Hungary, 75 percent in Bulgaria, and 60 percent in Yugoslavia. This was Stalin's price for ceding Italy and Greece. Eden tried to haggle: Hungary 75/25, Bulgaria 80/20, but Yugoslavia 50/50. After lengthy bargaining they settled on an 80/20 division of interest between Russia and Britain in Bulgaria and Hungary, and a 50/50 division in Yugoslavia. U.S. Ambassador Harriman was informed only after the bargain was struck. This gentleman's agreement was sealed with a handshake.(Stalin biography by Edvard Radzinsky)

"Fifty years on and in the wake of the worst anti-government protests since the end of communism, Hungarians cannot agree on the legacy of 1956, and so there will be two celebrations.

The official one for heads of state will be in Budapest's imposing Heroes Square where a huge abstract monument which has offended some survivors will be unveiled. A second will be held by some freedom fighters and the opposition, near to the national radio station, the scene of heavy fighting in 1956. About the only thing Hungarians can agree on is that the revolution, in which at least 2,600 of their countrymen and 600 Soviet troops were killed fighting, was spontaneous.

It made THE country live again briefly, after emerging in 1945 from the terrors of home-grown fascism and German Nazism only to enter the grasp of brutal Soviet rule, where it remained for 33 more years."

Someone asked me once what are the lessons of the Hungarian Revolution. This article shows one of the lessons

"The United States is now expanding international broadcasting to key repressive countries, including Iran, Cuba and North Korea. Even more should be done to encourage their peaceful evolution toward democracy.

Yet these are potentially volatile countries, and they may not progress by evolution. Looking ahead, U.S. government-sponsored radio and television stations could well find themselves broadcasting into civil unrest or violent upheaval - as Radio Free Europe did half a century ago to Hungary.

Surveys carried out at the time among the thousands of refugees streaming from Hungary showed that most had relied on foreign radio (primarily RFE, but also Voice of America and the BBC) for information."

Hungarian Souffle: the communist system in Hungary was not overthrown. It simply imploded.

The victory cost the Soviet Union a great deal--not just in money and lives but also in prestige and global influence. It was largely Hungarian defiance that led their communist rulers to make concessions by the mid-1960s and earn Hungary the bittersweet title of 'the happiest barracks in the camp'.

Janos Kadar--put in power by the Kremlin after the 1956 revolt--went from being the most hated man in the country to a genuinely popular politician. 'Those who are not against us are for us' sums up his position, meaning that if people leave politics alone, politics will leave them alone.
His popularity increased when he allowed some private ownership of property including household plots of land and some family businesses. People started enjoying a standard of living previously unknown with job security, full employment, subsidized vacations, free medical (and dental) care and no inflation.

Even today some villages in eastern Hungary have unemployment rates of 70 to 80 per cent: even 100 per cent is not unknown. The big losers in the changes have been the Roma people: in 1990 about 30 per cent lived under the poverty line while today it is closer to 70 per cent.

Soon the vast fire-sale known as privatization began and everything that belonged to the 'people' was sold to those with the most money--or the best contacts. Communist Party apparatchiks, state industry managers and administration officials used their Rolodexes as their capital to become highly paid consultants, managers, entrepreneurs.

In dollar terms as well as in the local currency (the forint) some of these 'access capitalists' became millionaires

embraced aspects of the free market while still under communist rule and in 1968 the authorities allowed limited decentralisation of the economy.

This helped to smooth economic transition. Within four years of the collapse of communism nearly half of the country's economic enterprises had been transferred to the private sector, and by 1998 Hungary was attracting nearly half of all foreign direct investment in its region.

Hungary played an important part in accelerating the collapse of communism across Eastern Europe when in 1989 it opened its border with Austria, allowing thousands of East Germans to escape to the West. Just a few months later the Berlin Wall was history.

Ελλάδα: ο παράδεισος του υπαρκτού σουρρεαλισμού, ήδη από τη δεκαετία του '50! Η καρα-Δεξιά και μετεμφυλιοπολεμική κυβέρνηση της Ελλάδας τιμά έναν κατ' εξοχήν Κομμουνιστή (με κεφαλαίο «Κ»), τον Ίμρε Νάτζ (και όχι Νάγκυ) ως... αντίποινα (!!!) στο γεγονός ότι η τότε ΕΣΣΔ τίμησε τον έναν από τολμητίες που κατέβασαν τη σβάστικα από τον Ιερό Βράχο. Αν οι Σοβιετικοί έβγαζαν γραμματόσημο με το Ζαχαριάδη οι δικοί μας θα έβγαζαν με τον ...Τρότσκυ;

Πενήντα χρόνια μετά την πρώτη προσπάθεια να ξαναστηθεί ο κομμουνισμός στην ανθρώπινη και ανθρωπιστική βάση του στην ίδια χώρα διαδηλώνουν ακροδεξιοί... Στραβός είν' ο γυαλός ή στραβά αρμενίζουμε;

Το άρθο της Wikipedia είναι πολύ μονόπλευρο, τώρα που το ξαναείδα γράφει "The neutrality of this article is disputed."

Σχετικό - άσχετο, βλέπω μία εκπομπή στο TV5 (Kiosque) και όταν έγιναν τα επισόδια στην Βουδαπέστη ένας από τους καλεσμένους ήταν ένας Ούγγρος δημοσιογράφος ο οποίος άρχισε την καρριέρα του σαν δημοσιογράφος γράφοντας άρθρα στον Monde για την εξέργεση του 1956. Καλό;

The Hungarian revolution was not the first uprising by a Soviet slave state against the Kremlin.

The East German workers uprising in 1953 holds that distinction. Nor was it the last, being followed by Czechoslovakia’s “Prague Spring” in 1968, and then by Solidarity in Poland in 1980, but it was the first tumultuous attempt by an nation to shake off the shackles of Communist domination.

The Soviets didn’t know how to handle the situation. They had heard Radio Free Europe broadcasts urging the Hungarians to throw off their shackles, and knew British intelligence was also instigating an overthrow.

Khrushchev actually began to with- draw Soviet troops and tanks stationed in Hungary. But when, after two weeks of street fighting, the western democracies did nothing, Moscow decided to chance it and sent a vast military force into the captive nation.

The bloodshed was a nightmare, the reprisals vicious. It would now be 1990, with the absolute collapse of Soviet might, before Hungarians were free.

The shame of the western democracies is they misled a valiant people.

The tragedy is if they had gone to help the Hungarians, the Soviet slave state empire would’ve collapsed 35 years before Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Pope John Paul—aided by Lech Walesa—brought it down.
...................................

A lesson here is unless we have the guts to tackle madmen such as North Korea’s Kim Jong-Il and Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad now, it will be far harder—and cost more bloodshed—to tackle them later.
