-Songs about 9-11-20o1-
SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 - NEW YORK. SEPTEMBER 11, 1973 - SANTIAGO. The Terrorist Attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York forever scarred the trust of the American people. On the same date, 28 years before, the Military Coup against the Chilean President Salvador Allende ushered in 17 years of autocratic rule under Augusto Pinochet, resulting in the deaths of more than 3,000 people and the torture of tens of thousands of others. In the dark and intensely compelling, animated film 9-11/9-11, conceptual artist Mel Chin creates a tale of two cities... a tragedy of two times. Weaving together a story of love and hope wrecked by overt and covert manipulations of power, 9-11/9-11 has been produced as part of a global dialogue about the human impact of these collective traumas. This film is a collaboration between artists and filmmakers in the United States and in Chile.
It is difficult to deal with realities as harsh as the terrorist attacks in the US on 9/11/2001 or the military coup in Chile on 9/11/1973. The effects of both tragedies continue even now. Chileans often speak of the date that their government was overthrown -- the date that began a 17-year dictatorship of oppression -- as "our little 9/11," deferring to the American event as the "big 9/11." Most Americans do not even know where the country of Chile is, and find it hard to believe that the United States supported a military coup there, leading to the death of a democratically elected president, the beginning of a dictatorship, the execution of thousands, and widespread torture. It is the artist's job to create a set of conditions such that a moment of empathy or reflection can occur. 9-11/9-11 is intended to provoke your curiosity and to encourage discourse. The nationalism that usually colors the discussion of these, and other, tragedies hides the simple humanity that ties us together.
